In 2002, Butler Properties was awarded the opportunity to develop build-to-suit stores for Dollar General in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. In 2003 and 2004 Butler Properties was assigned additional markets in Texas, Arizona, and Colorado. Since 2003 the company has delivered over 100 freestanding stores.
Dollar General is the industry leader in sales and number of stores for Dollar Store retailers. As of 2005, Dollar General operated approximately 8,300 stores in 30 states primarily located in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States and expanding in the Southwest. Dollar General generated over $8.1 Billion in gross sales in 2005 up from $1 Billion in sales in 1993. In 2007 Dollar General was purchased by KKR for $7.3 Billion and taken private.
